Purposes  For protecting piping materials and systems from corrosion due to air (oxygen).  For preventing water splashing at faucet due to the existence of air.  For preventing noise resulted from the ingress of air into cold/hot water supply systems, air conditioning systems, and other systems.  For the smooth startup and stable operation of water supply and other systems/devices through air discharge at the time of initial water conveyance.

Gate valves are also called shut-off valves or sluice valves and are manually controlled valves for on/off flow control by rotating a hand wheel to lift or lower a wedge (also called disc) in the (non-obstruction) flow path. Due to their simple design, they are reliable and require little maintenance. The brass housing allows it to be used for water or other neutral liquid media. Due to gate valves requiring multiple turns of the hand wheel it closes/opens slow enough to prevent against a water hammer

Check valves (also called non-return valve, one-way valve) are used to allow the flow of fluid in only one direction. They prevent the flow of fluid in the other direction.  Check valves work automatically and do not need to be operated. Most available types have a small spring to close the valve, the medium pressure in the forward direction opens the valve. Note that there is a minimum pressure required to open the valve (usually called cracking pressure).
